On Friday the Southerners traveled to Pocahontas High School for the 4A Senior High Conference Championships. After battling all day, the Southerners came away with a second place team finish with many personal records broken. It was an all-around team effort among everyone that competed.
Savion Hall took fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet 5 inches. Savion also took third place in the long jump. His long jump effort of 21 feet 3.5 inches was a new personal record. Seth Case took fifth place in the long jump, setting a new personal record of 20 feet 8 inches. He also competed in the triple jump, setting a new personal record of 35 feet 10 inches. Rounding out the jump squad was Caden Rowlett who took eighth place in the long jump, with a new personal record of 19 feet 6 inches.
Landon Cartwright took seventh place in the shot put, with a throw of 39 feet 5.25 inches. He also competed in the discus throw, with a throw of 100 feet 11 inches. Louis Calhoun and Seth Case tied for sixth place in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet. This height was a new personal record for Louis Calhoun.
In the sprints it was Seth Case and Canon Chaffin competing in the 100 meter dash with Seth Case setting a personal record of 11.84 seconds. Seth came back to take seventh place in the 200 meter dash with another personal record of 24.22 seconds, his fourth personal record of the day. Chris Robinson competed in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.44 seconds, which was also a personal record.
Canon Chaffin came back to take second place in the 400 meter dash, while also setting a new personal record of 51.45 seconds. In fourth place in the 400 meter dash was Savion Hall, who also set a new personal record of 53.64 seconds. Finally, rounding out the trio was Louis Calhoun who took fifth place in the 400 meter dash, while also setting a personal record of 53.95 seconds. This fast 400 meter group would return later in the evening for the relay.
Isaac Wallis took third place in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 16.10 seconds. Later he took second place in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 43.37 seconds. Samuel Reyes took ninth place in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 18.84 seconds. He also took sixth place in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 47.28 seconds.
And the night of personal records was only beginning. Tanner Ellenbaugh went out in a quick pace to take second place in the 800 meter run, setting a personal record of 2:10.62. This was over four seconds faster than his previous best time. Hayden Atchinson took fourth place in the 800 meter dash in a time of 2:15.97, less than half a second off his best time for the season. Caleb Middleton took seventh place in the 800 meter run, setting a personal record of 2:23.13.
In the 1600 meter run it was Caleb Middleton leading the way for Southside. He took seventh place in a new personal record of 5:29.30. Also competing in the 1600 meter run was Hayden Atchinson, Izaiah Puckett and Tanner Ellenbaugh. Hayden ran a time of 5:38.43, while Izaiah set a personal record of 5:57.77. Tanner ran 6:11.96. In the 3200 meter run it was Izaiah Puckett taking fifth place, followed close behind by Samuel Reyes in sixth place.
Starting the relays was the 4x800 meter relay team. Southside dominated by winning first place in 9:03.51, over sixteen seconds ahead of second place. This team consisted of Louis Calhoun, Samuel Reyes, Hayden Atchinson and Tanner Ellenbaugh. This was an extra exciting race as the Southerners were in a deficit when Hayden Atchinson took the baton and then closed this gap, putting the Southerners in the lead, and Tanner Ellenbaugh lengthened the lead on his leg of the race.
Southside took first place in the 4x100 meter relay in a time of 45.68 seconds. The relay team was Isaac Wallis, Seth Case, Savion Hall and Chris Robinson. Then Southside took second place in the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:35.55. The relay team was again Isaac Wallis, Seth Case, Savion Hall and Chris Robinson.
Finally, in the last event of the meet, Southside took first place in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:36.35. This winning team was comprised of Louis Calhoun, Canon Chaffin, Tanner Ellenbaugh, and Savion Hall.
In the women’s division Alexa Blevins continued her dominance by taking first place in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 6.5 inches. In the triple jump Alexa took fifth place with a leap of 32 feet 1 inch.
Amaya Smith took seventh place in the 100 meter hurdles, setting a personal record of 19.52 seconds. Amaya also took eleventh place in the 300 meter hurdles. Rounding out the women’s division was Abbigail Strother, who took seventh place in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:13.40. She also ran the 200 meter dash, setting a personal record of 31.29 seconds.
