The 4A Track and Field State Championship was held Tuesday in Clarksville. Southside High School fielded its best athletes at this event.
Leading things off, Savion Hall leaped 6 feet 3 inches to take first place in the high jump. This was his second-highest jump of the season. With this leap he was crowned the State Champion in the high jump. He outjumped 15 other jumpers in the 4A division to gain this title. He also placed ninth place in the long jump out of 22 jumpers, jumping 19 feet 7 inches.
The next top performance was the Southerners 4x400 meter relay team that took first place in the state in a time of 3:31.49. This was their fastest time of the season. They beat out 17 other teams in winning this event. The winning relay team was comprised of Louis Calhoun, Canon Chaffin, Tanner Elumbaugh, and Savion Hall.
In the 4x800 meter relay, the Southerners took eighth place out of 18 teams in a time of 9:15.52. The relay team members were Louis Calhoun, Samuel Reyes, Hayden Atchinson, and Tanner Elumbaugh.
Canon Chaffin continued his great season by taking fourth place in the 400 meter dash in a time of 52.77 seconds. There were a total of 18 runners in his race. In the 800 meter run Tanner Elumbaugh took thirteenth place out of 20 runners, running a time of 2:12.39. This was his second-fastest time of the season.
Isaac Wallis took fourteenth place in the state in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 16.82 seconds, out of 18 runners. He came back later and took ninth place in the 300 meter hurdles, out of 18 runners, in a time of 43.12 seconds.
In the men’s team competition Southside High tied for eighth place out of 32 teams.
In the women’s division Alexa Blevins took ninth place in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 4.50 inches. There were a total of 17 women competing in the long jump.
The Southside High School track team is coached by Michayla Heinrich, Tim Childress, and Suzanne Rains.
