CAVE CITY — The road was not kind to the Cave City Cavemen on Friday night in the 3-4A conference.

The Cavemen dropped a 21-6 decision to Jonesboro Westside to fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the league. However, Cave City can still get a playoff spot by beating rival Highland on Friday night at home.

“We probably played our worst football game we played all year,” Cave City head coach Danny Brustrom said. “We couldn’t get anything going.”

The Cavemen scored on the third play of the game when Eli Taylor broke into the Westside secondary and never looked back on a 70-yard touchdown run and led 6-0 after a botched extra point. Taylor finished with nine carries for 140 yards on the night.

“That was about the extent of it,” Brustrom said.

Maddox Moreland carried the ball 13 times for 73 yards for Cave City and quarterback Jacob Moore was 1-for-8 through the air for 21 yards of passing.

After the touchdown, the Cavemen punted on their second possession and fumble on their third drive. Another punt after three and out for Cave City gave West Side a chance at a score to make it 7-6.

Cave City got a first down on its next drive of the game and seemingly had a first down, but a holding penalty set the ball back to third down and 17 yards to go. The result was a punt.

The Cavemen had runs from Taylor for 16 yards and 11 yards during the third quarter, but West Side managed to make it 14-6 early in the second half.

Cave City had another promising drive halted by penalty and ended up turning the ball over on downs. West Side got their final score with two minutes to play in the game.

“The kept ball away from us for all but two minutes of the fourth quarter,” Brustrom said. “We just couldn’t get it going on offense. I felt like our defense played good. They gave up 21 points, but it was 14-6 with two minutes to go in the game.”

Cave City had the ball on three times in the second half.

“They were keying in on Maddox,” Brustrom said. “Every time he would go in motion, they would send one of their linebackers out of the box and we didn’t adjust to it. We tried to do something on the back side, but we would fumble or get a penalty. We had a good play drawn up where we jet him across and run buck sweep the other way. The pulling guard, who is not used to pulling that way, ran right into Jacob and fumbled the football. We had that happen a couple of times.”

Cave City was whistled for four penalties that cost them first downs during the game.
