The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz varsity basketball team season has kicked off and the team has nothing but high expectations. The Lady Bearkatz are coming off another successful season, which they finished with an overall record of 34-2 and 14-0 in conference play. They also went on to win the Arkansas 2A state championship for the second year in a row by beating Quitman.
Coach Eric Teague has scheduled several games with 4A, 5A, and 6A schools as challenges for the team to help them grow throughout the season.
They have responded with 3 straight victories over Jonesboro, Batesville, and Vilonia to continue the winning Bearkatz tradition with a hunger in their eyes. Most recently they defeated the Vilonia Eagles 56-46.
Since the Bearkatz Varsity Football team is in the midst of playoff season, the varsity boys’ basketball team only has 5 active players.
However, this is not an obstacle for Coach Scott Bowlin and the team. They are charging forward and playing to build off their successful last year season as well.
They won the conference championship and had a 19-11 overall record. They played a 30 minute running half against Batesville and full games against Mammoth Spring and Vilonia.
The Katz led the Vilonia Eagles until the final minutes of the fourth quarter and ultimately ran out of gas and fell to the eagles 37 to 44.
