Dear Editor:
I’m a retired educator (18 years classroom teaching with 22 as administrator). I have grandchildren attending Southside Schools.
I heard stories about how awful things were there and Batesville Schools even sounded worse. So, I stepped out to volunteer. I worked at Southside Jr. High and Southside Middle School.
True, schools are not run today as they were when I was principal. The dress code (whew). The freedom of movement and dismissing class before the bells ring. But, contrary to what was said, education is going on.
I witnessed academic growth, happy students and hard working teachers. The administration was open and welcoming to me. They even listened to an old retired educator sharing ideas and suggestions. I was allowed to go anywhere anytime.
I am totally impressed with the Professional Learning Teams, especially with the fourth grade program. I love the teachers there. They not only tolerated me, but actively requested my sharing expertise and abilities.
Special recognition goes to a young man I tutored. He worked so hard, he made me look good. Thanks also to Mr. Sweat who totally believed in me.
Also, thank God for giving me the abilities and opportunities to acquire valuable skills and talents.
Marjorie Barber
