A Pleasant Plains man that was accused of five counts of rape against a 5-year old female has been confirmed dead by Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens.
Lonnie Caveness, who was 60 at the time of his arrest reportedly missed a court date on Nov. 23 prompting Stephens to search for Caveness.
In a text message interview, Stephens said he found a funeral notice for Caveness on the website for Arkansas Cremation, a company based in Benton.
The notice stated that Caveness died on Nov. 20.
One of Caveness’ family members commented on a Batesville Daily Guard Facebook post that he “had double lung cancer and died in a hospital.”
Caveness had been charged with five counts of rape, a class Y felony, and one count of battery in the second degree.
He allegedly committed the acts against a 5-year-old female.
According to the affidavit, on July 29, the Independence County Sheriff’s Department responded to a referral that contained a written statement regarding a “conversation she had recently had with the female juvenile victim.”
