Top-ranked teams post mercy-rule victories

NORFORK -- It's rare when two top-ranked teams in the state play on the same night on the same floor, but that is what happened Tuesday night when Izard County visited Bobby D. Hulse Gymnasium.

The Cougars, the No. 1 team for Class 1A boys in the current Arkansas Sports Media High School Poll, closed out the evening with a 78-32 victory over the Panthers, improving to 22-4 overall and 9-0 in the 1A-2 Conference

Izard County led 24-8 after one quarter, 46-18 at the half and 70-27 after three quarters.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Coby Everett with 24 points, while Caleb Faulkner tallied 20. Justus Cooper scored 15 points with 15 rebounds.

Tyler Sorters scored 15 points to lead Norfork (11-13, 5-6).

The Lady Panthers, ranked No. 1 for Class 1A girls in the current Arkansas Sports Media High School Poll. overcame an early deficit and outscored the Lady Cougars 44-15 in the second half to roll to a 73-45 victory.

Izard County (14-9, 5-4) led 16-11 after one quarter and 30-29 at the half, but the Lady Panthers (22-4, 9-0) put the hammer down in the third quarter, outscoring Izard County 26-3 and took a 55-33 lead into the final stanza.

Macy Dillard led Norfork with 22 points, and Whitlee Layne netted 19.

Bethany Simmons led Izard County with 13, while Alli and Abi Marlin each scored 11.

Izard County's junior girls and senior boys games with Bruno-Pyatt scheduled for Friday at Brockwell have been moved to today, starting at 5, due to impending weather concerns for the weekend.

Also, Izard County's games with Omaha that were postponed on Dec. 7 will be played at Brockwell on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Tuckerman 69,

Cave City 54

TUCKERMAN -- And speaking of ranked teams, the Tuckerman Bulldogs -- ranked No. 3 in Class 3A -- defeated the visiting Cave City Cavemen 69-54 on Tuesday in 3A-2 Conference play.

Cave City (8-7, 5-3) held a slim 13-12 lead after one quarter but Tuckerman (21-2, 6-1) bounced back for a 31-28 lead at intermission and led 48-39 after three.

Caleb Anderson led the Cavemen with 17 points and Trenton Bell added 14.

Bo Roberson led Tuckerman with 19 points.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Cavewomen 55-34 in the senior girls' game.

Tuckerman (14-6, 5-2) led 27-21 at the half and 43-40 after three quarters.

Natalie Shelton led Tuckerman with 25 points.

Kaylee Howard led the Cavewomen (6-9, 3-5) with eight points while Brittany Walling hauled in seven rebounds.

Cave City's only win on the night was a 30-24 victory in the junior boys contest. Maddox Moreland led the Junior Cavemen with nine points and Micah Ranew added eight.

The Junior Cavewomen fell 38-18. Jewelee Howard led Cave City with 10 points, while Ester Beller had five rebounds.

Cedar Ridge 47,

Newport 37

NEWPORT -- The Cedar Ridge Lady Timberwolves picked up just their third victory of the season, and second of the new year, Tuesday night when they defeated the Newport Lady Greyhounds 47-37.

Cedar Ridge (3-11, 2-6) led 13-6 after one quarter, 26-11 at the half and 35-20 after three.

Laney Rider led the Lady Timberwolves with 21 points and Sharre Bolin added 11.

The Greyhounds defeated the Timberwolves 72-57 in the senior boys contest.

Tyce Gipson scored 16 points and Michael Smart netted 11or Cedar Ridge (4-11, 2-6). Connor Wheeler netted 9 points, Dray Gillihan tallied nine while Josh Weaver and Peyton Owen each scored six.

The Junior Lady Timberwolves improved to 11-4 with a 35-10 victory. Emily Harrison led Cedar Ridge with 11 points, Macie Hackworh netted six and Bree Horton added five.

The Junior Timberwolves dipped to 5-10 on the year with a 37-18 loss to Newport.
