(You can scroll over states and countries to see what the most recent incidents are. You can also search by incident, such as arson, airport, snipers, food tampering, etc., or do a search by country or city. Very interesting)

Science and Technology Museum

Below is an AP article about a science and technology museum being planned in northwest Arkansas. Four cities and one developer have expressed interest in this.

That part of the state is really growing in terms of economic development. While a science museum may not be right for Batesville, it does illustrate what communities need to do to build tourism. With no end in sight to the sky-high gas prices, Batesville needs to find ways not only to bring new people in but also keep residents close by for shopping, dining and other experiences.

Tourism development is crucial to our area's economic development.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Organizers who want to open a science and technology museum in northwest Arkansas are working to find a site on which they can build the facility.
The Northwest Arkansas Museum Foundation wants to find a parcel and put a strategic plan in place before working to raise money to build the museum. The group is seeking proposals for the 130,000-square-foot interactive museum, which backers hope to open within the next five years.
Foundation director Brent Robinson said representatives of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville and the cities of Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville have expressed interest in the museum, as has a local developer.
Robinson said the group hopes to choose a site for the museum by the end of the summer.
Other science museums in the state include the Museum of Discovery in downtown Little Rock and the Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs. Both feature hands-on displays that help children learn about the sciences.
Robinson said the general plan for the northwest Arkansas museum would have the site include an IMAX movie theater, a community auditorium, five museum galleries and a center for traveling exhibits. He said the foundation estimates the museum would draw about 150,000 visitors per year.
Robinson said the group has quietly pursued the museum for a reason.
"A normal process could take 10 years, and trying to keep everyone engaged is just daunting," he said. "Once the site is selected, it opens the door to whole new things."
Foundation board members want to develop a brand for the museum, conduct a fundraising feasibility study, recruit an experienced science museum director and develop content for the museum.
The idea for the museum was first brought forth by Fayetteville community leader John Lewis, who died in 2007.
"I think early on people thought John Lewis had too much of a dream," Robinson said. "(Lewis) liked to say, 'If it's a good idea, people will get behind it. "'
Robinson said the museum would be designed in a way the emulates Fayetteville architect Fay Jones. He said the site also should have elements such as a cave, bluff or body of water that could be included as an exhibit.
Proposals are due May 15.
