CALICO ROCK — The Fred Darragh Foundation of Little Rock has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Calico Rock Museum expansion project to be provided when the foundation obtains $15,000 in new commitments to the project.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to partner with the Fred Darragh Foundation in expanding our museum. This is a great opportunity for our community to show their support and meet this challenge,” foundation treasurer Velda Dixon said.

POTEAU, Okla. (AP) — Poteau police are investigating the death of an Arkansas man who was run over by a train.
Investigators say an engineer and conductor operating a Kansas City-Southern train saw a body on some railroad tracks about 2 a.m. Sunday and tried to stop the train but couldn’t in time. The victim was identified as 31-year-old Derek Scoggin of Waldron, Ark.

FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — A New Mexico-based company says it has begun building a wiring and circuit plant at Fayetteville, adding 75 jobs over the next several years.
Delta Group Electronics, based at Albuquerque, N.M., said in a news release Tuesday that construction had begun on a new, 36,000-square-foot building along Interstate 540 near the University of Arkansas campus.

Old Independence Regional Museum will continue its popular story time for toddlers and preschoolers this fall, volunteer coordinator Amanda Nikkel said.
“Make plans to join us for stories and crafts,” she said.
Story time begins at 10:30 a.m. on the following Fridays: Sept. 10, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Oct. 22, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.
“This program is free and pre-registration is not required, but groups of five or more are asked to call ahead,” Nikkel said. “Children must be accompanied by an adult.”

The Hunt Family will kick off the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville’s Performing Arts Series presented by First Community Bank at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1.
The Hunt Family performs Celtic, bluegrass, inspirational and original music, offering a unique blend of diversity to each show. In addition to fiddling and step dancing, this family of nine also plays guitar, bass, keys, drums and mandolin.

When 7-year-old Eli Reasons asked his mom if they could visit the Gulf Coast and help clean it up after the oil spill, Amy Reasons told her son they could not afford it.
“He asked if all the waterways were connected. I told him that ‘yes, in one way or another, all waterways are connected,’” Reasons said.
To raise awareness about the importance of keeping all waterways clean right here at home, Reasons said she and Eli will present the first annual Reasons Music Festival on Sept. 10 at Riverside Park in Batesville.

Al-Anon meetings in Batesville have a new meeting place.
Beginning Sept. 7, the organization will meet at 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday at the Grammer House, 668 Water St.

Beginning Steps, a free program provided by the Batesville School District to support parents of newborn babies, will have its regular monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Friday.
It will be held in the conference room of the education/risk management office of the White River Medical Center’s Collier Annex Building.

The burning of a wooden cross in the yard of a Salado residence early Saturday morning has been ruled as an act of arson, local authorities say.
Independence County Deputy Michael Calendar said a passing motorist saw a glow coming from a satellite dish in the yard of a residence on Church Drive around 1 a.m. and when they turned around to get a closer look, discovered it was a wooden cross on fire and called the sheriff’s department.
