Should journalists and news organizations participate in, even sponsor, political debates?
Let’s start with why we have such debates: They are an opportunity for us to hear directly from candidates, to see how they explain, attack and defend positions and proposals.
The value holds true whether it’s a local gymnasium chat-fest between city hall challengers or candidates with multimillion dollar White House campaigns on the line in front of a national TV audience.

I am very fortunate to live close to work and that allows me to go home for lunch every day. It’s a great break that allows me to sit in peace and quiet with full control of the remote and the ability to watch whatever I want with no whining.
I came across the Jerry Springer show the other day, which I haven’t seen in a very long time. Yep, it was still as awful as ever. Two women fighting over a loser of a guy, and the crowd cheering them on.

Could changes in the gaming industry someday affect YOUR job security?

I call it “junk news.” Like the junk mail we are all familiar with finding in our mailbox (both home and email), I’m finding tons of it on my TV and computer.
I don’t know exactly when it started, but I noticed recently that I was seeing more and more of the junk news and less and less of real news on the national news networks and home pages of web browsers like Yahoo.
The stuff I’m talking about used to be delegated to Hollywood gossip and sports shows, but now they dominate just about every audio/visual media out there.

The reason why the Cherokee named Sequoyah was heavily persecuted by his own people for his work on establishing a Cherokee writing system always puzzled me — until now.
Sequoyah lived from about 1770 to 1843.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I should write a book?” Perhaps you’ve said it yourself.
I believe everyone has a book in them.
As an author, people often approach me with the “everyone says I should write a book” line. They then proceed to either tell me their idea, which I always like to hear, or ask me how the publishing process works, which I find far less exciting to describe.
Writing a book is hard enough. Getting it published is even more challenging. You have to want it pretty badly.

There’s been a reversal of fortunes between Canada and America, and I’m not happy about it.
According to The Economist, Canada is doing well as America continues to struggle.
Our wiser, more cautious friends to the north avoided the housing bubble and financial collapse of 2008. They returned to robust growth in 2009 and have been growing since.
Unlike America, Canada’s debt and deficits are in good order. Canada expects to balance its budget by 2015 — whereas America’s budget comes up short every month.

It’s February and so far my resolution to get on top of the debit/diet is not going that well.
The editing my life part is still going pretty good and my house seems to be getting bigger now that I have less clutter, but I am having a harder time with the part about how and where I spend my money.
The goal is to have a plan and I am surprised at people in my age bracket who don’t have one. The real eye-opener is when you get those yearly Social Security statements showing just how poor you are going to be when you stop working.

Dear Editor,
Since I moved to the Batesville area 10 years ago, I have been very proud to say that I’m a member of the Batesville community. However, I have never been more proud than I was Monday night.
