ASH FLAT — Sample ballots for the May 18 primary elections in Sharp County are online, County and Circuit Clerk Tommy Estes said this morning.
“Voters in Sharp County can look at sample Democratic, Republican and non-partisan ballots by going to www.voterview.org,” he said. “It will ask your name and date of birth.”

ASH FLAT — Avondale Morris Street of Cave City traces her family back to William Morris, who as a teenager came to the East Coast from England in 1734.
“We have two stories about that — he was running away from home, or he got on the ship to tell friends goodbye and it sailed before he could get back to shore,” she told Sharp County Historical Society members. “We don’t know which is correct.”

Prosecutor cites clear case of self-defense

NEWPORT — No one will be prosecuted in the July 25 shooting death of 48-year-old Eulogio Garcia of rural Poughkeepsie, Third Judicial District Prosecutor Henry Boyce of Newport said Tuesday.

KVMN radio, whose call letters are sounded as “Caveman,” was among 10 nominees for Inspirational Country Music Station of the Year.

ASH FLAT — Safety equipment for chain saw operators is expensive, but not as expensive as a trip to the emergency room or a hospital stay, Logger Rescue Training instructor Dana Hinkley told those taking a safety class Tuesday in Ash Flat.
Use your safety equipment properly, Hinkley said.

WILLIFORD — As floodwaters were rising inside the Williford Library at daybreak Friday,  Marilyn Bischoff felt her dismay rising.
And then there was her anger — that was rising, too.
Despite the library’s flood-prone location, Bischoff contends that White River Regional Library system director Debra Sutterfield and some members of the Sharp County Library Board have “stonewalled” or downright thrown “roadblocks” in the way of moving the library to another location on higher ground. The Williford Library is part of the White River and Sharp County library systems.

Outdoor writer Jill Easton of rural Calico Rock regaled an audience at Old Independence Regional Museum Sunday afternoon with the history of trapping in the Ozarks and along White River in particular, as well as showing several types of traps, pelts and fur coats.
She dispensed advice about trapping, how and where to set traps and how furbearers behave. Knowing the animal you are seeking and its habits are central to catching it, she said.

ASH FLAT — The Sharp County Quorum Court learned Tuesday during a regular meeting that the county jail is out of compliance with jail standards.
The jail is understaffed and also does not have an activity room for inmates, 3rd Judicial District Jail Standards Review Chair Sylvia Ross wrote.

CAVE CITY — Recently elected Cave City School Board members Kirk Ratliff and Stephen Stauffer were seated during last week’s regular meeting, and Bobby Sanders was appointed to the board to replace the late Johnny Wayne Carter, Superintendent Steven Green said.
Board members elected officers as follows for the 2009-2010 term: Dean Hastings, president; Wendell Saffell, vice president; and Gregg Asberry, secretary. It was established that signatures of Hastings and Asberry will now be used by the district on checks and other documents where board signatures are required.
