Son shares dad’s WWII pictures

Myrlas Matthews of Batesville rests against a concrete barrier making up a part of the Siegfried line erected by Germans during World War II. Allies were able to cross the barrier by filling in with dirt so tanks could easily move over the line.

Myrlas Matthews had just graduated from dental school when he went into the military. While his comrades were armed with guns and tanks, Myrlas had his dental clinic and a camera, capturing moments as only an insider could.
Now, many of those pictures will be shared with the general public at the Independence County Fair, during the first Veterans Appreciation Day, said his son, Doug, also a dentist. Until Myrlas’ retirement, the two worked together in the same downtown Batesville office building, which still bears Myrlas’ name on the front.
